Encaustic Art

4 Women with a Palette

During South Australia’s SALA Festival, I was fortunate to exhibit 18 of my encaustic pieces with 3 other artists. Colleen Morrow, lino-cut printing. Kerry Thompson aka Kerry T Creative, acrylics. And Nina Ventura, vintage mannequins. Held in the light-filled Bridgewater Arts Centre. Thanks to event coordinator Dawn Benjamin, and the BAC volunteers. I wonder what SALA 2022 will bring.

After the exhibition is over, I’ll be wanting to clear some studio space (and the lounge room!), so head over to the SHOP after August 30th for sale of remaining exhibition pieces. There’ll you’ll find pieces discounted by 15% off the exhibition prices.

If you weren’t able to get along to the show, you can check out each of my pieces HERE.
Below are a couple of images taken during the August festival.
My Guitar? I was able to finish writing a new song during some quieter gallery moments! So win-win!

“What is Encaustic?” I hear you say….

That was me too, 7 years ago, about to attend my first workshop in Encaustic Art. I had not heard of the medium prior. Essentially, I paint with molten beeswax mixed with damar resin.

  • I have a collection of pots of pigmented molten wax on an electric hot plate.

  • I paint multiple layers of the wax onto wooden panel boards. The wax starts solidifying …..then the fun begins.

  • I use a butane blow torch to fuse the layers of wax, and also move/blend layers, creating gorgeous blurs of colours.

  • I enhance some pieces with burned shellac, added oils and inks. After a couple of days, the piece can be buffed to a warm sheen. The surface offers up a warm translucency. It can be created super-smooth, or be accentuated by texture.

It is such a unique, yet ancient medium. And yes, I’m a little obsessed! ❤️

Commissions

In 2022, I’ll schedule some studio time devoted to negotiated commissions. But numbers will be limited. So get in quick if you wish to tee up a 2022 commission spot.

Music

Musically, the year has been quiet on the live performance front. It has mostly been devoted to working with Jamie Blechynden of Stella One Studio, Tanunda on gestating my second studio album “Lovers’ Moon”. Jamie has been doing the hard slog recording, mixing and mastering. While the final finishing touches are being sprinkled on, here’s a chance to tell you just a few small snippets about the album, without spoiling the surprise which will come later!

13 of my original songs. With amazing studio musicians to boot, including Beej Barker, Mark Elberg, The Whiskey Sisters (Cloudy, Vicki and Pru), Mel Glamocak, Ashley Turner, Briony Taylor, Bernie Bremond, and Jamie. I’m so grateful for all of their shining talent! It’s rich and full, and bursting to say hello to you all.

Release

Be on the look out for single releases, hopefully with some home-made videos (that’s been fun), and album launch dates. Yes, I’ll be pestering you at some stage to come see this album take flight.

Of course, the album will be launched onto the usual streaming services. Meanwhile a CD copy of the album can be pre-purchased NOW. Go to the SHOP to order your copy. Any purchases will receive a complementary copy of my first album “Bit of Earth”. Later there’ll be download cards available also.

Hmmmm, what merchandise would work?!! What’s your favourite music merchandise?

Songwriting

I continue to write songs, and this year I’m aiming to enter a number of Songwriting competitions. So far, I’ve entered into the annual competitions of Australian Songwriting Association, Tamworth Music Songwriting Association, and of course SCALA FOOM. Wish me luck! If you feel like collaborating, be in touch!

That’s it. I’ll be back in touch when we get to the next stage of getting “Lovers’ Moon” out there!

Stay safe folks! Throwing lots of love out there!
