Sue Baker, artist, with short gray hair and glasses, smiling at the camera, wearing an art apron and black sweater.

As an artist based in Adelaide (on unceded Kaurna land), South Australia, I find ongoing inspiration in the rich natural beauty and quiet rhythms that surround me. I work with encaustic medium (made from beeswax combined with damar resin).

I aim to capture and evoke the quintessential qualities of the natural world in my art. The unpredictable and transformative qualities of encaustic wax resonate deeply with the ever-changing elements of nature, allowing me to investigate layered textures, subtle colours, and shifting forms in ways that reflect the organic flow, seasonal rhythms, and evocative moods of the environment.

My work has multiple layers of wax medium, creating depth, luminosity and subtle complexity. This thoughtful, tactile layering process mirrors the strata and histories embedded in nature itself. Like timelines and sediments laid across the landscapes each layer quietly holds memory, movement and the traces of time.
